Start a Chapter!
WiNN works to create an inclusive community. We welcome all women working in conservation. If you’re looking to connect professionally with other women working in conservation, habitat restoration, wildlife research and protection and related fields, don’t see an existing chapter in your region, and would like to start one, read through our Q & A’s below to learn more about what’s involved!
-
Yes! Any woman interested in and passionate about conserving our planet and supporting girls and women in conservation can start a WiNN chapter.
-
Find a core group of 3-5 people who are likewise motivated and passionate about conservation. Decide on a consistent meeting time. It’s helpful to define a board with delegated roles and tasks for each member, perhaps one to be in charge of outreach, another for group communications. If you're a student, find an on-campus adviser such as a faculty member or a group of affiliated professionals who can offer you guidance.
-
Reach out to WiNN via our general email: womeninnaturenetwork@gmail.com to let us know about your chapter. Next, be sure to join our WhatsApp group .
Next, start spreading the word about your group locally through some of the suggestions in the next question!
-
Grow your chapter by creating engaging activities such as outings to visit community conservation efforts in your region, conservation and gender focused book clubs or movie nights, and networking opportunities.
If you're near a college, you might reach out to ecology, geography, or sustainability/conservation departments to tell them about your chapter and encourage interested women to join! You can also reach out to any local nonprofits dedicated to conservation.
Reaching out to local media to announce your group’s formation might reach additional interested women; you might also post in the Calendar or Events section of your local newspaper if one exists. Create an Instagram and Facebook accounts to post conservation information and updates about your events! -
WiNN groups are fairly autonomous in that they create their own priorities and appoint their own board members. We support these groups through the connections and announcements offered via our five WhatsApp groups; our global annual conference; our monthly Wednesday Webinars and our mentor program.

“The motivation to start a chapter in Nigeria was to bring women together from different areas of conservation, to be able to share the highs and lows of working in conservation. For me WiNN is exciting because it’s about bringing each other up and not condemning or criticizing each other.”
