Our India chapter include community women and and renowned wildlife biologists including , UN Champion of the Earth Rr. Purnima Devi Barnam, pictured above, known for her work mobilizing village women in India to protect the endangered Greater Adjutant Stork, known locally as the Hargila Stork.

Purnima’s work highlights the incredible power of women to have an impact on the conservation of species and our planet, whatever their professional titles or level of education. Most women in the Hargila Army are not professional conservationists, but community members who have taken it upon themselves to protect the endangered Hargila Stork because they care and have learned about the deep weave of connection between human beings and all other species. Today, Purnima’s “Hargila Army” consists of over 10,000 women who protect the bird’s nesting sites, rehabilitate injured storks and fundraise by crafting and selling sustainable stork themed goods.

Each person, each species, we are all interconnected. Hargila birds, they are such an important species, and were endangered. People had a negative perception towards the birds. I realized that I would have to change the mindset of the people. I wanted to save the species from extinction.
